Central to our Christian witness is a commitment to an integration of faith and the mind in ways that guide faithful action in our churches, communities and world.

We believe the gospel should transform every aspect of the world, including policy making. We invite you to consider a broad range of areas in which you can embody faithful action by speaking up to your elected officials.

CURRENT ISSUES

Call for Immigration Reform

The U.S. Congress has a unique opportunity to finalize critical immigration reforms in the next few months in a way that blesses our nation and our immigrant neighbors. Our antiquated immigration system has kept families separated, harmed our economy, and left many long-term immigrants without permanent legal status. Our border has been poorly managed. As evangelicals we want our immigration system to honor the dignity of every human being made in God’s image, while also respecting the rule of law. By modernizing our immigration system we can achieve both objectives.

Help End Childhood Poverty in the United States

As we follow God’s heart for the poor and vulnerable, we advocate for extending or making permanent the improved child tax credits. These tax credits directly help support families by alleviating financial pressure for many families. Unfortunately, improvements to the child tax credit expired in 2021. Join us in asking Congress to make the improved child tax credits a permanent part of our tax code.

Support Pro-Life Safeguards

Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court returned the decision on abortion policy to citizens and the legislators they elect, overturning Roe v. Wade. Still, important federal policies related to pro-life concerns are on the table. For example, the Hyde Amendment has prohibited funding of most abortions through Medicaid. Please urge Congress to maintain Hyde Amendment language in full-year spending bills.

Help Farmers Benefit from Environmental Responsibility

Many family farmers use sustainable agricultural practices that store carbon in the soil rather than releasing it into the air, protecting against forest fires, droughts and floods that are more threatening as our climate changes. Through market-based carbon credit exchanges, farmers can be rewarded for their contributions. But the technical standards are not well developed. Without these, the markets remain weak. The Department of Agriculture can help by establishing clear carbon sequestration standards as they have for meat, poultry and produce. Ask your representative to establish a clear carbon standard to benefit farmers and care for God’s creation.

Increase Access to Mental Health Care

The nation grieves significant loss with each mass shooting. Lives are also lost every day due to gun violence. Not all are a result of mental illness, but many could be prevented by increased access to mental health care. Increasing access to mental health resources is critical to the flourishing of families and our society. As Congress considers several related bills, ask your members of Congress to consider access for mental health care.

Protect Afghan Allies

Our Afghan allies continue to live under grave threat. Working alongside U.S. military forces, they have risked their lives and that of their families throughout the nearly 20-year conflict to bring peace to the region. Now, with the Taliban takeover, we must honor this sacrifice by ensuring their safety through efforts to evacuate those left in the country, and provide aid and support for Afghanis starting over in a new nation.

Support Refugee Resettlement

President Biden announced his plan to resettle up to 125,000 refugees during FY 2022. In light of the unprecedented refugee crises, this will be lifesaving for refugees, inspiring to other countries, and clearly in our national interest. But it isn’t guaranteed that we will reach this ideal. Continued pressure on the administration is needed. Scripture calls us to defend the widow, orphan and refugee among us (Psalm 82:3—4). The time is now!

Prevent Childhood Malnutrition

More than 800 million people around the world lack enough food to eat. Nearly one in five children worldwide are malnourished. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) does a lot to address hunger and malnutrition, but with better coordination even more can be accomplished. The bipartisan Global Malnutrition Prevention and Treatment Act of 2021 (S. 2956/H.R. 4693) would direct USAID to take child hunger into account when deciding where and how to work, and to report annually on the impact of this work. If enacted, this will lead to greater accountability and effectiveness for life-saving international assistance resources.

Support Biblical Immigration Principles

Our national immigration laws have created a moral, economic and political crisis in America. Initiatives to remedy this crisis have led to polarization in which opponents have misrepresented positions as open borders and amnesty. This false choice has led to a political stalemate at the federal level at a tragic human cost. We urge our nation’s leaders to work together to pass immigration reform that embodies these key principles and will make our nation proud.

Promote International Religious Freedom

Promoting freedom of religion and conscience throughout the world not only protects a fundamental human right, but also acts as a source of stability for all countries. As evangelicals who are called to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30–31), we should urge regimes that are severe persecutors on the basis of religious belief to implement religious freedoms while commending emerging democracies in their implementation of freedom of religion.

testimony

“The National Association of Evangelicals models both conviction and cooperation. When the NAE speaks, it is with careful theological reflection and with a tone that never compromises the gospel of Christ or the mission of the church. As the Body of Christ engages often complex questions facing civil society, it is a blessing to have a strong, unifying, biblically-anchored ally in the National Association of Evangelicals.”
